Adding Fractions (Same Denominator)

Mathematics · Fractions · procedural

Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, including results greater than one whole (e.g. 5/8 + 6/8 = 11/8)

What mastery looks like

  • Calculate 3/5 + 4/5 = 7/5 and explain it equals 1 2/5
  • Subtract 2/6 from 5/6
  • Solve addition problems where the sum exceeds the whole: 7/8 + 3/8

Check your understanding

If a recipe uses 5/8 of a bag of flour and then another 6/8, can Adding Fractions (Same Denominator) work out the total and explain what the answer means as a mixed number?
